  • FreeNAS: Move NFS home directories to new pool

Moving part of a dataset to a new pool and change the exported NFS directories in bulk.

  • Debian FAI with iSCSI and IPXE

Move diskless cluster to iSCSI diskless cluster. This is how we did it.

  • Quantum SuperLoader3 LTO6 Tape Library with Debian Wheezy

Finally, we are able to make real backups! We acquired a Quantum SuperLoader 3, a 16 tape LTO-6 library. There were some unexpected hoops and bumps down the road, but everything appears to be working now.

  • Konica Minolta bizhub c364e: CUPS and Usage Tracking

We got a new printer, a Konica Minolta bizhub c365e, but to be able to print from Linux/CUPS with usage tracking enabled on the printer there need to be some adjustments to the supplied PPD file from Konica Minolta. There is a way to to do this via CUPS and a custom cups filter, here I will describe another way.

  • Open DNS Relay and dnsmasq

We have dnsmasq running on a PC connected directly to the internet. It is also used for DHCP and PXE booting for the nodes of our cluster as well as for the other PCs on our public subnet ($PUB_SUBNET). Without careful configuration this can lead to an open DNS relay server.

  • Interfacing Lakeshore 335 Temperature Controller with Debian Squeeze

How to connect a LakeShore 335 temperature controller via USB to Debian 6.0 (Squeeze) and access it with Python using the python-serial package. Ans some USB kernel magic.

  • Defragmentation in Linux

Our cluster’s main storage partition is a 18 TB RAID-6 array with 10 drives, attached to a “proper” NAS controller (with battery backup) formatted with the XFS file system. For sure you would expect it to be better than a mere 46.6 MB/s on a sequential read.

  • External functions and Grace

Grace, known also by its command xmgrace, is a program for creating scientific graphs and is also capable of common data analysis tasks like fitting, Fourier transformation, etc. Unfortunately, the built-in mathematical functions are in some cases not enough. The Grace authors added therefore a mechanism to facilitate the loading of external functions.

  • From static IPs to dynamic IPs

We are finally our own master of our subnet! In this post I will describe how we went from static to dynamic IP addresses using dnsmasq.

  • New site online!!!

I moved my former site which used GetSimple CMS to an I hope even simpler (if that is possible) tool: Jekyll. It seems to be a bit more simpler and it is easier to setup because jekyll creates static sites which can be easily copied to, and served, by any web server or provider.
